AWS Cost Optimisation – Part 1

Will the upcoming new AWS charges help stop our addiction to IPv4 or is Amazon “taxing fresh air”, that is, charging us for something that’s hard to give up?

Uptake of IPv6 has been painfully slow (seeĀ https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/aws/new-aws-public-ipv4-address-charge-public-ip-insights) but for a user of EC2 for personal services at home I will be reducing my footprint. This new charge will more than double the cost of my nano instances and as such I will be merging multiple services onto fewer servers.

Many new ISPs don’t support IPv6 and it’s not even on their roadmap which just perpetuates our addiction to IPv4. IPv6 support will dictate my choice of ISP next year when my contract ends.

Do we need legislation to force ISPs to speed up support?

Do we need brave big companies to stop offering IPv4 to their website or app?
